課程概述

This course is designed to introduce DFLL students to university-level English writing. We will continue to focus on one key pattern of paragraph development, argument. First, we will learn to use MLA style in citing texts and documenting sources; and then we will learn to write arguments as means to engage in academic conversations by analyzing and responding to selected texts of various literary genres, including novel, poetry, film and drama. Students will rehearse using MLA style through two exercises and practice writing arguments through three paragraphs and three revisions. Students will also have the chance to acquaint themselves with the technicality of academic writing through two group presentations and read and learn from published literary criticism of contemporary scholars through one individual presentation. Students are expected to attend regularly, to read with diligence and criticality, and to passionately engage with course assignments and class discussions.
